WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – A fire Friday night at a building under construction in Winter Haven prompted the evacuation of a nearby apartment complex, according to police.

Winter Haven and Polk County fire crews responded around 9:30 p.m. to 1599 6th Street SE, arriving to flames shooting through the building’s roof, according to a statement from the Winter Haven Police Department.

Firefighters worked the blaze for about two hours before deeming the scene safe for investigators, police said. During the fire, the building’s roof collapsed and further impacts were thought possible to a neighboring two-story apartment complex, leading police to conduct evacuations of all residents until the fire was put out, the statement reads.

No firefighters or civilians were injured and the apartment structure suffered no damage, officials said.

“This was an extensive fire with buildings very close that were in danger of being impacted,” Fire Chief Sonny Emery said in a statement. “Our crews were dedicated to not only extinguishing the flames, but maintaining a constant defense to protect the surrounding structures.”

The fire is still under investigation.
