Project has been in talks since 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. – Members of Orlando’s Municipal Planning Board unanimously signed off on the long-awaited Orlando sports and entertainment district Tuesday.

The project surrounding the Kia Center, formally known as the Amway Center, has been in the talks since 2011.

The first renderings of the project were released last year.

“I’m excited about that, I think that’s cool,” Sedrick Bernard said.

Bernard works in downtown Orlando and said he likes the idea of having more options near the arena.

The project, located at W. Church Street and S. Hughey Avenue, across from the Kia Center, will bring a hotel, 270 residential units, retail and office space, a 3,500-capacity live event venue, a festival plaza space and a parking garage.

“It’s going to bring more tourism it might be more safe just so people can have fun, go inside the Kia Center and not worry about driving home they can sleep and then drive home in the morning,” Bernard said.

“Smart. A lot more money coming into the city so it’s exciting,” Bernard said.

The next step is for the MPB minutes to go before city council for approval on the anticipated date of Monday, Feb. 19.

Following approval of the minutes, an ordinance will be drafted and come to city council for two readings. The ordinance read dates will be determined once the minutes go before council.
