VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A 16-year-old faces charges after deputies said he shot a 17-year-old in the leg at Hawkins Park in Deltona on Jan. 15, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies originally reported that the teen was shot while sitting on a park bench, but on Wednesday said the victim was in the driver’s seat of an SUV at the park.

According to a news release, the suspect was in the seat behind the victim when the shooting happened.

Deputies said the victim and witnesses told investigators that the shooting was accidental.

The suspect — who News 6 is not naming because of his age — faces charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm by a juvenile and discharging a firearm from a vehicle.

He was was taken to the Volusia Family Resource Center for processing and then transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice, according to the release.
