Your Florida Daily: Priest among 4 killed in Palm Bay, K-9 finds missing 11-year-old girl in park bathroom

ORLANDO, Fla. – There’s been a big development in the deadly shooting spree in Brevard County that left two Palm Bay police officers hurt.

The department now confirms four people died Sunday afternoon, including murder suspect 24-year-old Brandon Kapas.

The police chief revealed there was a second crime scene. A retired Palm Bay priest and his sister were found dead in their homes about seven miles away from the first crime scene.

Investigators think this all started when Kapas got angry during a birthday party and killed his grandfather, then shot and injured two officers who responded to the scene, police said.

“Our officers actions yesterday prevented something even more tragic and devastating from happening what could have potentially have been an active shooter type incident and scenario,” Palm Bay police Chief Mariano Augello said.

The officers hit by gunfire, identified as Stephen Ball and Nicholas Franze, are recovering from their injuries.

Investigators later discovered Kapas had been driving a car that belonged to a former priest named Robert “Bob” Hoeffner.

“He had an arsenal of weapons inside his vehicle,” Augello said.

When they went to the priest’s home, police found Hoeffner and his sister, Sally, dead.

The existence of the two other victims was never released to the public until the church released a statement mourning their losses.

“It’s all tragic. This is all tragic. but we don’t know the motive right now,” Augello said.

Police have not been able to identify the relationship between Kapas and these two other victims.

Florida Prepaid College Board introduces significant price reductions for open enrollment

Florida Prepaid has announced price reductions for plans which could mean refunds for your child’s college savings plan.

On the website, monthly plans are already reduced up to 25% off.

For example, a one year university plan for a newborn starts at $34 a month and a two year college plan starts at $39 a month.

“This is our third roll back in 10 years, and it reflects the fact that our university and college tuition has remained really stable,” Florida Prepaid spokesperson Shannon Smith told News 6.

“And so when we see that pattern we are able to go back to our plan prices, re-evaluate those, and where it makes sense for those who have purchased plans in a certain window of time we are able to reduce prices, and in some cases provide refunds.”

Several families have already received a letter letting them know about the price drop.

On average each customer can expect a refund of at least $2,600, but some families are finding that number to be more than double that.

Open enrollment starts on Thursday, Feb. 1, and it will close on April 30.

And a Florida K9 is being praised for being a very “good girl” after finding a missing and endangered 11-year-old girl in a playground bathroom.
