ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A man was shot and killed by deputies after lunging at them with a knife in the front yard of an Orange County home Tuesday afternoon, according to Sheriff John Mina.

Deputies said the shooting happened in the 4700 block of Davisson Ave. around 3 p.m., not far from the intersection of Lee Road and Edgewater Drive. Mina said deputies were called for reports of a man who had cut himself.

“As soon as they got to the front yard, a man emerged from the house — running at them, extremely agitated, holding a large knife. Our deputies shot the suspect. He fell to the ground. They were able to subdue him, render aid and he was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” Mina said.

The sheriff’s office posted online asking drivers to avoid the area of Lee Road and Edgewater Drive.

Mina said the knife was recovered at the scene of the shooting. He also said that the home had been the scene of about 16 deputy responses over the past year for a variety of calls.

The man was identified as Decarlos Cornelius Long, 43.

The deputies involved in the shooting have not been identified.

“I believe he (the man who was shot) has a history of mental health issues, but I will tell you I watched the video myself — he ran out of the house fast with a knife right at the deputies,” the sheriff said.

The shooting will now be investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The two deputies involved are on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the investigation.

No deputies were injured.
