Sailboat dumped on Florida beach finally removed, owner still facing littering charge

Boat was in the area of Drum Avenue in New Smyrna Beach

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Good news for visitors to New Smyrna Beach. An abandoned sailboat was removed Thursday.

Sky 6 was over the scene Thursday morning as crews were preparing to move the boat in the area of Drum Avenue.

Last month, News 6 reported that the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office had an arrest warrant out for the boat’s owner, Michael John Grimes, 49, for felony littering.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood told News 6 Thursday afternoon the boat, “was removed this morning, but the cowardly scumbag is still at large. If he thinks that arrest warrant is going away, he’s got another thing coming to him.”

The sheriff could not confirm to News 6 who paid to have the boat removed, but original estimates put the cost at $15,000.

Chitwood said the boat’s owner was recently discovered near the Mexico border, but was not taken into custody despite his outstanding arrest warrant.
