Hearing on controversial development in rural Osceola County postponed

Neighbors are concerned about project’s density, increased traffic

ST. CLOUD, Fla. – A controversial proposal to bring new townhomes and single-family homes to a rural part of east Osceola County was unexpectedly pulled ahead of a key planning commission meeting Tuesday night.

News 6 reported last week about the developer’s plans to build 87 townhomes and 15 single-family homes on a 16-acre lot along Pine Grove Road in east St. Cloud.

Neighbors are concerned about the project’s density, the additional traffic it would bring, and the potential environmental impacts for Lake Lizzie.

Before the project can break ground, the developer is looking to annex the property into the city of St. Cloud, change the future land use designation from Osceola County’s low-density residential to the city’s medium-density residential, and rezone the property.

Those requests were set to be heard at a St. Cloud planning commission meeting Tuesday night, but the developer pulled the items ahead of the discussion.

In a statement to News 6, St. Cloud’s communications director said, “The applicant emailed staff to request to postpone the items. They did not give us any details as to why.”

The requests will likely be tabled until April or May, according to neighbors who attended Tuesday’s meeting.

The developer, whose mailing address is in Canada, has not returned calls for comment.
