MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A Summerfield suspect in the 2023 shooting death of a 55-year-old man in Marion County was arrested Wednesday, accused of murder, according to the sheriff’s office.

Joseph Edward Horrighs, 38, was arrested following his indictment by a grand jury on a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm, a news release states.

Horrighs is accused in the death of Darius Dunyel Jones, 55, whose body was found with multiple gunshot wounds Sept. 21, 2023, at the scene of a vehicle crash in the 2500 block of SE 174th Place, according to the release.

Detectives have since determined that Horrighs and a witness were picked up by Jones and driven to a local Walmart that day, where Horrighs — allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine — expressed paranoia regarding the location. Leaving the store, Horrighs and the witness reportedly began to argue, prompting the witness to leave the vehicle and head home as Horrighs and Jones were left together for around 20 minutes before the shooting occurred, the sheriff’s office said.

Shell casings matching those found at the crime scene were found during the execution of a search warrant, detectives added.

Horrighs is currently being held at the Marion County Jail on no bond, the sheriff’s office said.
