VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Volusia County leaders have decided to pursue new rules that would let county residents park free on the beaches.

During its Tuesday meeting, the county council voted unanimously for county staff to draft the new resolution, which would essentially eliminate parking fees for these residents.

To accomplish this, the county seeks to charge non-residents for off-beach parking lots by using an electronic license plate system. However, the fee amount has not yet been decided.

Meanwhile, off-beach parking would still be free for residents.

In addition, the county is looking into ways to increase the price of beach driving passes for visitors from $20 per day to $30.

If the new rules are approved, the changes could be implemented as early as fall.
