ORLANDO, Fla. – An Orlando man was sentenced to life in prison Friday for the murder of his ex-girlfriend last year.
Tyrese Johnson, 33, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Joan Foster-Taylor, 50, after a four-day trial.

Police said Johnson shot Foster-Taylor at the Metro Place Apartment Complex on June 24, 2023. She later died from her injuries at an area hospital.
After the two broke up, police said Foster-Taylor had the door locks to the apartment changed because she and her roommate saw Johnson’s vehicle in the complex several times, and evidence suggests he may have broken into the apartment.
Voice recordings on Johnson’s phone, according to police, show a pattern of obsessive behavior and jealousy that the victim may have been dating other men before the murder. Police said the search history on Johnson’s phone a couple of days after the murder included, “Does Jesus want me to confess my sins to the police.”
Johnson was arrested in October.
Court records show Johnson’s attorney has filed a motion for a new trial. The attorney says the judge was wrong to allow certain evidence related to whether Johnson harassed Foster-Taylor in the months before the murder.
