HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A man who jumped into a medical vehicle in Hillsborough County and drove off, later crashing it in a lot, has been arrested, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident happened early Friday in the area of the southbound I-75 exit ramp to westbound I-4.
According to troopers, an American Medical Response supervisor came across a stolen pickup around 2 a.m. that had crashed on the exit ramp. One man ran down the embankment when the supervisor arrived and another man was standing in the roadway, FHP said.
The man, identified as 36-year-old Gregorey Brian McGall, jumped on the side of the American Medical Response-marked Chevy Tahoe and climbed inside the vehicle with the supervisor still inside, troopers said.
“The AMR supervisor was then able to open the door and escape without injury as the man drove off with the Tahoe,” a release said.
Troopers said the Tahoe went further along the exit ramp and sideswiped a Nissan Altima.
Hillsborough County deputies spotted the vehicle near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard but lost sight of the driver after a chase, FHP said.
According to an FHP report, the system in the Tahoe alerted staff a crash happened around 2:09 a.m. and captured a photo of the man who carjacked the vehicle.
The vehicle was found abandoned and crashed in a grass lot.
McGall was arrested on a grand theft auto and carjacking warrant in Osceola County and troopers additionally charged him with carjacking, aggravated assault and criminal mischief stemming from the March 22 incident.
He is booked in the Hillsborough County Jail.
