ORLANDO, Fla. – An Orange County woman will spend the next 23 years in prison as part of a plea deal for a 2023 crash that killed a father and son who were visiting UCF.

Leslie Gehret will take a plea deal that includes a little over 23 years in prison, for the charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, driving with a suspended license and causing serious bodily injury or death.

Gehret will also have 12 months of probation once she serves her time. She must also complete 50 hours of community service and attend DUI school. In addition, her driver’s license is permanently suspended.

Shane Lloyd, 50 and his son Jakob Lloyd, 19, were visiting UCF in July 2023 when they were killed in the crash near Lake Underhill Road and Rouse Road.

“The pain of losing Shane and Jakob in a horrible car crash is hard enough, but knowing that it was preventable and caused simply by the irresponsible, reckless and selfish actions of another is beyond measure,” said Sydney Lloyd, Shane’s wife and Jakob’s mother. “Shane and Jakob would still be here if not for the extreme indifference Leslie Gehret exhibited that day.”

Troopers say Gehret was drunk when she ran a red light and slammed into the Lloyds’ car, causing it to overturn. Troopers say Gehret had been arrested on DUI charges three times in the past 10 years.

Gehret originally had pleaded not guilty to all charges, but as part of the plea deal her plea was changed to no contest.

Lloyd’s family said Jakob had just graduated high school in Colorado and was planning to major in forensic chemistry in the fall. He is expected to be remembered on Tuesday at UCF in a memorial service called Eternal Knights.
