LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – The lone occupant of a small plane died Friday afternoon upon crashing in an open field near Groveland, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and other first responders were called after 1:30 p.m. to 6548 Groveland Airport Road regarding a single-passenger plane crash, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

The occupant was pronounced dead, deputies said, reporting no other injuries.
An ongoing investigation has since been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.
Friday evening, the FAA and NTSB issued brief statements about the crash, noting it involved a “Dragonfly Experimental aircraft.” According to the NTSB, one of the plane’s wings folded while in a traffic pattern at Sheets Airport.
