Sanford restaurant where 10 were shot did not have proper permits. County deciding next steps

Port says late-night events will no longer take place

SANFORD, Fla. – Seminole County leaders are now discussing the next steps in the wake of the shooting at Cabana Live over the weekend.

During a news conference on Monday, Seminole County Sheriff, Dennis Lemma shared that Cabana Live did not have the proper event permit in place to hold the labeled “Nobody Leaves Sober Pool Party.”

Both Lemma and Seminole County Commissioner Jay Zembower said they are not sure the event permit would have stopped the shooting from happening. However, Zembower said the process is there to make sure they have the proper preparations to make sure everyone is safe.

“If we’re not aware of something occurring, we can’t deploy the assets or have the assets on hold ready to deploy in the event something goes awry,” Zembower said.

Zembower said they’re now looking at what needs to happen next.

“Our attorneys are looking at it very closely and I think this matter really rises to a higher level considering what occurred,” Zembower said. “Firearms by a minor, you know, in a situation of alcohol being served. I think that’s what really needs to be addressed first and foremost for the event that occurred.”

News 6 spoke to a representative from the Port of Sanford on Tuesday and said they issued a notice of default on the lease to the master tenant, Marinas LLC.

The Seminole County Port Authority sent News 6 a statement that said in part:

“The marina operator has advised the port that these late-night events will no longer take place and that the restaurant/bar will operate as a family-friendly establishment appropriate to marina operations.”

News 6 went to Cabana Live to try to speak to someone on Tuesday, we were told they are not providing comment at this time.
