DELAND, Fla. – City leaders in DeLand have been debating what to do with the old Hotel Putnam site downtown.
Now, a developer is looking to purchase the land and build an affordable housing apartment complex on it.
On Monday, the city commission will hear a “concept plan review” from city staff about the project.
Some residents News 6 talked to said they understand the need for more affordable housing, but hope the commissioner keep their options open.
”The downtown area is already very crowded,” said Donna Beaty.

The developer, Blue Sky Communities, submitted renderings to the city showing a five-story building with 84 apartment units. Out of those units, 10 would be special need dwelling units to accommodate families transitioning out of homelessness.
The developer would even try to incorporate some architectural details from the old Hotel Putnam.
The hotel was demolished in February 2023 after sitting empty since 2011.
News 6 reached out to the city and was told commissioners will hear about the project at their regular meeting Monday, but will not make a final decision.
