ORLANDO, Fla. – YMCA Operations Director Pat Jackson is getting ready to welcome dozens of children this summer to the Wayne Densch YMCA in Pine Hills.
Jackson said summer camp starts Tuesday, May 28, one day after Memorial Day.
“Opening ceremonies for us are huge because that is a way to get them excited about camp. We really want to focus on them and the start of the day,” Jackson said.
The program offers arts and crafts, STEM, reading time, sports and swimming lessons for elementary-aged children.
“Part of their swim experience is if they cannot swim, they are going to be with our instructors and we’ll teach them how to swim,” Jackson explained.
While the YMCA is a tradition for many families, some parents are not able to afford summer camp, which is why the Heart of Florida United Way stepped up.
“We know this is great for the kids, but it’s also important for the parents so they can work and not worry about their children,” said Ray Larsen, of United Way.
The nonprofit donated $25,000 to the YMCA to help bring summer camp prices down and give parents the opportunity to register their kids for the program this year.
Initially, the YMCA reduced the price from $150 to $100 a week but with the donation from the Heart of Florida United Way, parents can pay $55 a week instead.
The program has 50 spots open at the Wayne Densch YMCA location.
“Our communities have to trust each other. Growing up, I knew my neighbors. Not everyone knows their neighbors, so I think for us we can hopefully build neighbors coming together to build a stronger community,” Jackson said.
