News 6 went to the scene and spoke with Hattie Glenn, who said she was there visiting her granddaughter.
“I’m in the room talking to her and next thing I heard something popping, like popcorn or something, and I rushed in the kitchen and the whole (stove) was on fire, fire was just blazing from the stove,” Glenn said, recalling two adults and three children were in the unit when it happened. “I hollered at them, ‘Fire, y’all get out,’ and everybody started running out because it was smoked up.”
According to Glenn, the Red Cross had been contacted but hadn’t yet responded to the scene.
“Clothes, food, furniture, everything, everything,” Glenn said of what was lost in the fire. “All through the house, all the rooms flooded out, it’s like a storm came in and flooded your house out.”
Glenn said that her granddaughter had reported issues with the stove in the past, questioning why it hadn’t yet been replaced after several alleged previous fires.
“The fire people said it was from grease, because she had been complaining about her stove, it makes this the third time she’s had a fire about that stove, I don’t know why they didn’t get her a new stove or if they tried to fix it and it’s not doing no good,” she said. “...We really need somewhere to go.”
