$100K reward offered for info leading to arrest in 1994 Volusia murder case

Laralee Spear, 15, murdered 30 years ago in DeLand

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood says the reward has doubled for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whomever killed 15-year-old Laralee Spear in 1994.

A cash reward of $100,000 is now being offered for this information, the final piece of the puzzle that investigators have sought now for 30 years.

Spear, a DeLand High School student, was sexually assaulted and killed after getting off her school bus on April 25, 1994. Investigators say her body was found just 200 yards away from her home along Deerfoot Road.

The sheriff’s office in 2021 marked 27 years since Spear’s murder, offering a cash reward of $50,000 for information leading to her killer. Though the present cash reward of $100,000 has doubled this, the former amount was itself twice as much as the $25,000 offered just a month prior to the 27-year mark.

Chitwood announced the higher reward amount on social media, confirming the same in a Facebook post sharing Nancy Grace’s coverage of the fatal kidnapping on her “Crime Stories with Nancy Grace” podcast.
