Orlando police holds safety summit for Hispanic seniors

Seniors learned about identity fraud, CPR, fire safety tips

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Police Department is getting results this summer through its Hispanic Senior Safety Summit.

The event is to help Hispanic seniors learn how to be aware when it comes to scammers and what to do in case of an emergency especially if they are living alone.

“I like it. Very instructive. Especially for us older people. We are more at risk,” Elsa Beteta said.

Beteta, 73, told News 6′s Ezzy Castro how she fell at home last year and wasn’t able to get up to find her cell phone to call for help.

Beteta said she is now thinking of getting a Life Alert device after learning about it during Tuesday’s presentation.

“This program really helps,” Beteta said.

Dozens of seniors participated in Tuesday’s summit and learned about identity fraud, CPR and fire safety tips from the Orlando Fire Department.

“Our seniors should not be ostracized,” District 2 Commissioner Tony Ortiz said.

Ortiz explained educating seniors about safety is a priority and it’s programs like this one that continue to get results.

“These are the people that built this great nation, and their golden years need to be golden, so we are there for them,” Ortiz said.
