Car struck by gunfire in road-rage shooting along I-4 in Volusia County

Shooting happened around 9:10 p.m. in Deltona

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A 62-year-old man pulled off of Interstate 4 on Monday night to an odd sight — his car had been shot up as he was driving, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

In a release, troopers said the man was driving in the eastbound lanes of I-4 between mile markers 105 and 108 in Deltona around 9:10 p.m., which is when the shooting happened.

Investigators said they learned that an “unknown dark-in-color sedan” had been in a road rage incident with the man.

“The suspect was obviously potentially upset that he was cut off and that’s why he brake-checked, and then there was yelling between the two,” said FHP Lt. Tara Crescenzi. “We don’t know what words were said at this point in the investigation, but once the victim tried to separate from the vehicle is when he heard the loud bangs (gunshots).”

The man’s car was struck by five bullets on the right rear passenger side, troopers said.

“The victim relocated to a nearby gas station and discovered his vehicle had been struck by gunfire,” the release reads. “The victim then reported the shooting to law enforcement.”

Crescenzi said it’s best to not engage with other motorists who are enraged.

“Just notify law enforcement immediately as the situation is occurring,” she said. “It is always important to report these types of incidents, but actively let us know what is going on so we can try and get law enforcement to you quickly.”

The man described the sedan driver as a “Hispanic male in his mid-to-late 20s with longer, curly, black hair,” troopers reported.

However, troopers added that there was no other identifying information about the sedan or its driver.

Deputies are asking anyone with information about the case to call the FHP at (407) 737-2213.
