Sunshine, sand and water slides: Cocoa Beach attracts thousands for Fourth of July

Riverfront Park fireworks display is free to visitors

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – A beautiful Independence Day in Brevard County was marked by lots of sun and as expected every July 4: large crowds coming to beaches.

Strong rip currents remained a concern of lifeguards who told News 6 reporter James Sparvero they stayed busy this Independence Day.

“Have you had any emergency water rescues today?” Sparvero asked Jackie Allen, a lieutenant with Brevard County Ocean Rescue at Lori Wilson Park.

”We’ve had quite a few,” Lt. Allen answered. “Some in Cocoa Beach and then some down in Melbourne Beach.”

Allen continued that no one was seriously hurt. Lifeguards also treated some people at beaches for showing symptoms of heat exhaustion.

And while people have always come to the beach in Brevard County on July 4, there is a new tradition in downtown Cocoa Beach.

At Area 142 at A1A and Minuteman Causeway, the two-story outdoor bar set up a water slide.

Once the sun goes down, the closest fireworks to Cocoa Beach will be across the 520 causeway at Cocoa Village.

The annual fireworks show at Riverfront Park is free.
