NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – New Smyrna Beach police say a 16-year-old boy was arrested on Independence Day after being found in possession of a gun reported lost out of Orange County.

Officers found the gun during a traffic stop, the New Smyrna Beach police department said on social media. The firearm had been reported lost in 2023, the post states.

The teen was arrested to face charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a person under 21 years old, possession of marijuana under 20 grams and violation of probation, police said.

The police department otherwise said it was thankful to report overall successes for the Fourth of July, handling the holiday without any major incidents as officers arrested seven adults and three juveniles in the Flagler Avenue area.
