PONCE INLET, Fla. – A 14-year-old boy from Flagler County was bitten by a shark at Ponce Inlet on Monday while attending Junior Lifeguard Camp for the day.
According to Volusia County Beach Safety, it happened around 11:15 a.m. as the teen entered the water in the beach area just north of the New Smyrna Beach Jetty. Witnesses said as he was diving into the water, he landed on a 4-to-5-foot-long blacktip shark and that’s when the shark bit his calf.

The shark bite marks the third in less than a week in Volusia County, the other two occurring in New Smyrna Beach. Last Thursday, a 21-year-old Ohio man was bitten by a shark while playing football in “knee-deep water,” then on Friday, a 26-year-old Sarasota man was bitten as he waded in an inner tube in approximately 5 feet of water.
Both of those injuries were non-life-threatening.
