Orange County sheriff requests $13 million for deputy pay raises

John Mina fears losing deputies to Orlando Police Department

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The Orange County sheriff on Thursday requested millions more in his budget to give pay raises to his deputies.

The sheriff said his agency lags behind others in the area when it comes to pay and it’s causing some to leave, asking for another $13 million in his budget.

“We have deputies right now watching to see what we do. I guarantee the application for Orlando police is already filled out,” he said. “They’re just going to hit ‘click’ if they don’t get that raise.”

The sheriff also mentioned during the meeting that homicides have dropped over 37% in 2024, with violent crime down over 10% in the past few years. The news comes as the sheriff’s office made an arrest Thursday in the death of a 13-year-old girl found with “obvious signs of trauma.”

It’s not known yet where the extra money for raises would come from.

The new budget needs to be in place by Oct. 1.
