ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – An Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Friday fatally shot a man who carried a gun into a 7-Eleven near Orlando, according to Sheriff John Mina.

The sheriff’s office’s gang unit shortly before noon was conducting surveillance on a house where multiple alleged gang members all “suspected of numerous crimes” were located, officials said. A man carrying a firearm was seen leaving the house and riding a scooter to the convenience store at West Oak Ridge Road and Kingsgate Drive, Mina said at a news conference that afternoon.

“Once inside the 7-Eleven, our deputies attempted to make contact with the man. He turned away, then turned back toward the deputy, appeared to reach for a handgun. He was told to stop multiple times. That’s when our deputy shot the man. The man fell to the ground. There was a struggle for the gun and the man was shot again,” Mina said.

The man was reportedly pronounced dead after deputies attempted to perform first aid on him, according to Mina.

“Our top priority here, the sheriff’s office, is combating violent crime and that includes gang members who are committing violent crimes in our community, and that’s how we do our job, right?” Mina said. “We conduct surveillance on gang members who are suspected of crimes and they saw the man leave the house with a gun — the gun was a Glock with an extended magazine — and the man walked into 7-Eleven, didn’t obey the commands of law enforcement.”

Mina described the man as white and “approximately 19 years old,” adding it appears he did not fire the Glock at any point. Only one deputy fired a weapon and no other injuries were reported, the sheriff said.

“Obviously he didn’t want to talk to law enforcement, turned away, then saw another law enforcement officer, turned back towards our deputy, appeared to reach for the firearm, he was told to stop at least four times and our deputy ended up shooting the man,” Mina said.

Another individual was with the man at the convenience store, but Mina said they had not committed any crimes as far as he was aware.

Body-worn camera video of the shooting was recorded, the sheriff said. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting before turning its findings over to the State Attorney’s Office. Once the SAO completes its own review, an internal investigation will be conducted within the sheriff’s office, according to Mina.

The deputy who fired their weapon is on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the initial FDLE review, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
