‘Frustrating and concerning:’ Cause of ground depression under Florida home still unknown

City officials said ‘ground depression’ measures 10-by-10 feet and about 5-feet deep

GROVELAND, Fla. – Charles Alvarez has lived on Compass Rose Drive in Groveland for over 18 years and says he has never heard of anything like this happening on his street.

He and his family had to evacuate their home on Saturday night when a large hole was discovered under his next-door neighbors’ house.

Experts described the hole as a “ground depression,” which caused several nearby homes to be evacuated.

“It’s frustrating and concerning to think your home could be in danger,” Alvarez said.

News 6 was there when Groveland Fire Chief Kevin Carrol escorted the Allstate insurance representative around the house for an initial inspection. He told us they are keeping the water and power turned off for safety reasons, although they don’t see it as a threat to the neighborhood.

“This hole has not grown in size or moved in almost 48 hours,” Carrol said.

Chief Carroll also says the hole appears to be 10-by-10 feet and about 5-feet deep.

Groveland officials said this is a private matter between the homeowners and their insurance company. They won’t know what caused this hole or if it’s a sinkhole until soil samples come back.
