Power restored for thousands in Eustis after substation fire

County Road 44 is also shut down in the area

EUSTIS, Fla. – A fire at a Duke Energy substation Sunday night left thousands without power in Eustis.

The fire was at the electrical substation located near County Road 44 and Apiary Road, in the Grand Island area.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office believes lightning sparked the fire, however, Duke Energy says the cause of the fire is not known at this time. The utility company says the fire was sparked around 6:45 p.m.

Duke Energy said at 5 a.m. Monday that power has been restored to all the homes impacted by the fire.

Video sent to News 6 by Savannah Greene shows huge flames and thick black smoke, which could be seen from a nearby neighborhood.

Duke Energy reported at least 7,600 customers in the area are without power but as many as 9,700 have been affected. Crews are working to restore power now.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this outage has caused and appreciate our customers’ continued patience. We also extend our gratitude to fire rescue and all of the first responders for their immediate response and assistance in today’s fire,” a Duke Energy spokesperson said after the fire.
