WINTER PARK, Fla. – You might be able to order those mimosas, Bloody Marys and other Sunday brunch cocktails at an earlier time at Winter Park restaurants.

Winter Park commissioners on Wednesday discussed an ordinance that would allow restaurants to start serving alcohol at 7 a.m. on Sundays.

Currently, alcohol sales and consumption can begin at 7 a.m. on all days except Sunday, when alcohol sales are limited to an 11 a.m. start time. The ordinance is intended to provide consistency in the hours of sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages every day of the week.

The 11 a.m. start time dates back decades to Florida’s “blue laws” that were intended to restrict the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages on Sundays. For many years, Winter Park had a noon start time on Sundays, but that was changed to 11 a.m. to accommodate Sunday brunch.

Supporters argue that supermarkets and convenience stores also struggle with current Sunday sale hours for customers wanting booze for a day at the beach or for planning for afternoon activities, especially during football season.

The first reading was approved by city commissioners. It wasn’t immediately known when the next reading will take place.
