ORLANDO, Fla. – A flock of giant pigeons has migrated to downtown Orlando as part of the city’s latest art project.

Nine 16-foot-tall colorful, inflatable pigeons are perched on rooftops along Orange Avenue, Central Boulevard and Church Street.

The art installation is called “Big City Birds” and it’s the second installment of Creative City Project’s collaboration with DTOLive, which was launched by the Downtown Development Board (DDB) and United Arts of Central Florida.

“Really, the goal of all these components it to bring more people to downtown,” DDB Executive Director David Barilla said.  “Support our local businesses and hopefully people come down and sometimes spark some interesting conversations, which we hope this initiative will do.”

Through the vision of Orlando artist Brendon O’Connor, “Big City Birds” invites viewers to spark dialogue on the resilience and adaptability of urban wildlife.

“By making (the pigeons) these bright colors, we bring this conversation to life and we say what is the role of these animals that we share these spaces with in downtown,” Creative City Project Founder Cole NeSmith said.

The project was installed Thursday and will be displayed through October 17.

Maggie Finley works downtown and said it was encouraging to see the city display some artistic flare.

“I think it’s fun. It’s definitely entertaining and something different to look at, which is always nice,” Finley said.  “Anytime we can get more arts to the people, that’s wonderful.
