OCALA, Fla. – Eight-year-old Jack Keuntjes, of Ocala, is turning heads with his mullet. But for him, it’s more than just a haircut.
The boy said people comment on his mullet “every single day.”
Jack has been growing his mullet for three years, inspired by his dad. However, a several months ago, while still in second grade, Jack had to undergo brain surgery.
“He needed surgery to relieve the pressure, and they only took a small piece of his hair off, so he was able to grow it back in time for the competition,” said his mother, Kristie Keuntjes.
With his mullet intact, Jack entered “The Mullet Champ” competition, which benefits the Jared Allen for Wounded Warriors Foundation. He has made it to the third round of voting.

“They need specialized homes for wheelchairs and things like that,” Kristie Keuntjes said.
The family added that Jack’s grandfather was a veteran.
So far, Jack has raised more than $6,700, with a goal of $10,000.
“My message would be, also, it’s super fun to talk about mullets all day. I never thought this would be something that I’d do. It’s really important to support those that have protected our freedoms. Freedom isn’t free, and this is just one small way of giving back,” Kristie Keuntjes said.
Jack said he plans to keep growing his mullet well after the competition.
“He was proudly showing it off, so he’s coming out of his shell,” Kristie said.
