Man accused of shooting at neighbors in Mims

Antonio Kent, 45, faces felony charges

Antonio Kent (Brevard County Sheriff's Office)

MIMS, Fla. – A Mims man arrested last week is accused of pulling a gun and shooting at his neighbors during a shouting match with them, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 7 p.m. Aug. 14 to the 2800 block of Cypress Avenue, making contact with three victims — two women and a juvenile — who said the alleged shooter lived several doors down in the 2600 block of Pineapple Avenue. The defendant, 45-year-old Antonio Kent, was then handcuffed as deputies investigated, according to his probable cause affidavit.

One of the women told investigators that she was walking her dog in her yard when Kent started a verbal altercation with her from his front porch, one that escalated to the point that Kent allegedly walked back into his home and returned with an apparent handgun that he briefly raised at her. The victim said that Kent walked back to his porch before returning to the yard and continuing the altercation, at which point the woman called her roommate outside, the affidavit states.

With Kent and the roommates in their respective yards now, the juvenile had begun recording what happened next while partially hanging out of a bedroom window, according to deputies. Kent allegedly returned to his porch and is observed repeating, “Say something else,” while concealing his right hand behind him. On the video, Kent can then reportedly be seen moving his right arm and revealing an apparent firearm, which he raised in the direction of the victims before five gunshots are heard. Upon hearing the shots, the juvenile victim quickly moved away from the window, according to the affidavit.

Kent acknowledged the verbal altercation happened but told deputies he never fired a gun at anyone and was only pointing a BB gun at the victims, adding the victims were the shooters and had fired at him around 10 times. The reporting deputy notes there was no evidence to substantiate Kent’s claims.

Deputies did recover a BB gun that resembled a Glock inside Kent’s home, along with a Smith & Wesson .38 Special revolver, a Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun and .223 ammunition, the affidavit states.

Kent faces charges in connection to the incident of discharging a firearm in public or on residential property, possession of a firearm, weapons and/or ammo by a convicted felon and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, records show.

He was given a $70,000 bond at his first appearance in court on Aug. 15 and his arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 12.
