OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – Dozens of families have a new place to call home after the expansion of an affordable housing complex in Kissimmee.
On Wednesday, local leaders celebrated the grand opening of Cameron Preserve II near U.S. 192 and Yates Road.
“It’s families living here and we’re taking them, sometimes, out of some precarious housing and into someplace that’s safe and stable for them,” Osceola County Commissioner Viviana Janer said.
The affordable rental project includes an $8.2 million financial commitment from Osceola County.
“For us, it’s really important to make these investments and we, strategically, use some of the COVID dollars to invest in here because what’s more important than our families,” Janer said.
Phase 1 of Cameron Preserve was built with 100 units in 2018. With the second phase, 84 units have been built and all have been leased.
“It shows there is a demand,” Florida Housing Financial Corporation board member David Hall said. “It shows we’re trying to catch up to the demand so people can have a permanent place to live.”
Monica Cabrera recently moved into her apartment and said the rental gives her stability and comfort that she can afford.
“I’m super happy, because finally I can handle (the rent) and being able to have my own place,” Cabrera said.
Officials said Osceola County has committed $43 million over the next four years for different affordable housing projects throughout the community.
