Wrong-way crash kills bicyclist in Orange City, police say

ORANGE CITY, Fla. – A man riding an electric bicycle Saturday night in Orange City was killed when he was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver, according to police.

The bicyclist — identified as Joel Acevedo, 35, of Orange City — was pronounced dead at the scene, police said in a news release.

The crash occurred around 8:29 p.m. on East Graves Avenue near Raintree Drive as Acevedo rode the bicycle west in the westbound lane, the release states. A 2016 four-door Hyundai driven by an 80-year-old Deltona man was traveling east in the westbound lane when it struck Acevedo head-on in the 1000 block of East Graves Avenue, according to police.

Both vehicles sustained signifigant damage and the Deltona man was hospitalized for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the release states.

Orange City police are still investigating. The Deltona man was not facing charges at the time of this report.
