ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The city of Altamonte Springs will provide self-service sandbag sites Friday in anticipation of more heavy rainfall.
The sites will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Altamonte Springs SunRail Station and Westmonte Recreation Center while supplies last and as weather permits, according to the city.
Sand and bags will be provided but not shovels. Households are limited to 15 bags each and city staff will be onsite to help if needed.
Central Florida has seen double-digit rain totals since last weekend as a stationary front remains draped over us, triggering storms and supplying enough moisture to flood some low-lying areas during otherwise typical afternoon downpours.

More of the same is expected. The National Weather Service in Melbourne issued flood warnings Thursday night along the St. Johns River near Astor affecting areas of Lake and Volusia counties where the river was expected to remain in minor flood stage through Friday.
High rainfall rates have overwhelmed storm drains, as well as the ground’s capability to absorb water, joining rivers and streams in flux to cause much of the flooding reported in Central Florida since last weekend.
