According to the release, the male student was involved in a text group with several other students who attended Hinson Middle School. Some of the students began to make fun of the boy when the child sent a photo of a gun and threatened to shoot one of the students and the school, police said.

Police said they initially thought the student, only identified as an 11-year-old boy, was also a student at Hinson, but an investigation revealed he was a student at Halifax Academy.

The boy was arrested and faces charges of written threats to kill.

According to the release, the second incident involved a Westside Elementary student who at 9:33 a.m. is accused of telling other students in his class that he would shoot two of his classmates and a substitute teacher.

Police said while on break, classmates observed the student, identified as a 10-year-old boy, with a BB gun tucked into his waistband.

According to the release, the students notified a teacher who then spotted the boy running toward the school’s fence. The boy “appeared to dispose of an item” by throwing it over the fence and the school resource officer was notified.

Additional law enforcement arrived at the school and during a search, found a plastic magazine for a BB gun was found and a search of the student’s backpack revealed BBs.

Police said the boy ran from the school, but as later detained and taken into custody. Police did not say what charges the child may face.
