OVIEDO, Fla. – Leaders in Oviedo on Monday are set to vote on a new mobility fee for developers as part of a broader plan to manage growth and infrastructure.
The fee could increase the cost of new development by thousands of dollars.
Mayor Megan Sladek told News 6 said this is new for the city and said the money is needed to keep up with extra congestion around the city.
“Right now, developers pay a transportation impact fee and it’s mainly related to roads, so this is going to shift it to moving people and moving people inside our zone,” Sladek said.
She also said the mobility fee would be for the next two decades.
According to the proposal, a new single home would cost developers $2,700. And for small businesses, the fee ranges from $3,800 to nearly $50,000 for places like fast-food restaurants.
“I think that’s what people expect is when developers pay impact fees, they wanted to fix here not over there somewhere so this fixes that problem,” Sladek said.
Oviedo is not the only city that has considered this fee.
Osceola County passed some of the highest building impact fees in the state last week, despite objections from developers and other critics who point out the fees are just passed along to buyers.
Monday night’s council meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. in Oviedo.
