NASSAU, Bahamas – The U.S. Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Defense Force are no longer actively searching for a 66-year-old woman who went overboard Tuesday night from Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas ship near Nassau.

The woman went overboard around 9:40 p.m. when the ship was about 17 miles north of Nassau, the Coast Guard said, adding the Royal Bahamas Defense Force had taken the lead in the search.

In a statement, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said the ship’s crew immediately launched a search-and-rescue effort and was working with local authorities.

“We are also providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. To respect the privacy of our guest’s family, we have no additional details to share,” the statement continues.

At 2:11 p.m. Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard announced that the search had been suspended.

Allure of the Seas sailed out of Miami on Monday for a four-day cruise and is due back Friday.
