FEMA opens pop-up help site in Seminole County following Hurricane Milton

Seminole County declared a designated disaster area

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – Seminole County residents can now register for disaster recovery assistance at a newly opened FEMA pop-up registration site at the Winter Springs Civic Center.

Following the effects of Hurricane Milton, FEMA declared Seminole County a designated disaster area.

Those in need of assistance can visit the Civic Center located at 400 N. Edgemon Ave. to register for individual assistance or update a previous application.

Application update assistance will be provided Friday through Sunday, Oct. 25-27, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Applications can also be done online at www.disasterassistance.gov or through the FEMA app.

FEMA’s hotline is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week and can be reached at 1-800-621-3362.

If you apply and are denied, FEMA media relations specialist Sara Zuckerman said the appeal process isn’t difficult.

“It’s really important to read through that letter because it could be as simple as you missing your driver’s license or you’re missing one piece of information that could make you eligible. Read a little bit further and figure out that appeal process is not really hard,” she said.

Larry Doan was out at the site Friday morning.

“I think it’s good that the government, FEMA, is doing a good job here trying to help people that went through this,” Doan said.

Earlier this month, FEMA opened two new help centers in Orange County at Bithlo Community Center on Washington Avenue and at Apopka City Hall on Main Street. The centers are open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to help residents apply for disaster relief.

In a Q&A session with News 6, Willie Nunn, a senior FEMA official said there were 10 FEMA help centers open before Hurricane Milton. Now, there are 16.

To apply for help you will need:

  • Your Social Security Number
  • Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are currently living
  • A contact phone number
  • A list of damages and losses
  • If insured, the policy number and the name of the agent or company
