BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A silver-haired bat was rescued in Brevard County on Wednesday and Wild Florida Rescue believes it might be the first of its kind to be found in the area.

Just in time for Halloween, Wild Florida Rescue said they found the bat at a beachfront condo and transported it to Jenny White, who specializes in bat care and rehab.

The bat appeared to be uninjured but in need of food and rest, according to White.

The North American Bat Biologist Group identified the bat as a Lasionycteris noctivagans, a silver-haired bat, which is known for living in old growth forests with small tree hollows, cliff face crevices and cave entrances.

In a statement on Facebook, White said that the mammal is rare for the region.

“The silver-haired bat may be one of the most abundant species in the U.S. and Canada but it certainly is not common in Florida,” White said. “While the Space Coast may be outside of the listed range of Lasionycteris noctivagans this little lady apparently did not get the memo!”

The rare find occurred during bat week, which is recognized internationally from Oct. 24-31.
