Commissioner: Orlando considering new security measure after downtown shooting

Shan Rose says single entry point could implemented

New security checkpoints coming to downtown Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – The city of Orlando is considering a massive new downtown security measure in the wake of a deadly shooting early Friday morning.

Commissioner Shan Rose, District 5, told News 6 that the city is deciding whether to cordon off a large section of the downtown area, allowing access at only one point.

“We have been working with the businesses and some of the residents downtown to look at options of going to a full, coordinated entry access point,” Rose said.

Rose said the security measure would be implemented on weekends and during special events, like Halloween.

She said people entering the area would be scanned for weapons and they would be required to scan their identification cards.

She said the plan is not fool-proof, but it would deter revelers who come to downtown to create problems.

The city of Orlando implemented a similar security measure in 2022, however, there were several entry points when that plan was rolled out.

“There were some issues with the way the program was structured,” she said. “Now, we’re working with the businesses to get the businesses’ full buy-in, so that it’s a fully coordinated collaboration.”

Rose told News 6 a decision on the potential new security measure is imminent and it could happen within the next few days.

Two people were killed, six others were wounded and another person was trampled and injured in the early Friday shooting as many celebrated Halloween.

Jaylen Edgar was arrested in connection with the shooting, the motive of which is not yet known.
