Terrell Barkley's death is 22-year-old cold case. Volusia County is offering $50K to help solve it

Terrell Barkley found dead Nov. 8, 2002

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – There’s not a day that goes by that Louease May doesn’t think about what happened to her son.

“Put yourself in my shoes. If this happened to someone in your family, you’d want someone to come forward and say something,” said May.

This Friday, November 8th, marks 22 years since 22-year-old Terrell Barkley was found dead right here off the 1300 block of South Adelle Avenue in Deland

Slumped over the wheel of his truck with signs of trauma on his body.

Neighbors in the area say investigators have come to this area several times asking questions but still to this day. No killer has been found.

“The investigation found that he was out gambling. He may have won money and because of that win he was murdered,” said Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

On Friday, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office announced a $50,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.

“There’s people at our community didn’t know what happened and Terrell’s mom needs closure and his family needs closure two years later,” said Chitwood. “There’s a $50,000 award out there and keep in mind for those of you were responsible. There was forensic evidence that was recovered there technology has now morphed all that stuff is now being resubmitted. There’s re-interviews out there.”

Sheriff Chitwood said May reached out about raising the reward after noticing the Sheriff’s Office began raising rewards on several other cold cases.

Chitwood said there’s no guarantee that this will help solve the case but it’s worth exhausting every effort to find justice for Terrell and his family.

“I’m hopeful because I’m trusting in God. God said the vengeance is mine, and I will repay it. I’m leaning and trusting on God,” said May.

Sheriff Chitwood said all of the 54 cold cases have at least a $50,000 reward.

Family and friends also shared gifts with the family and held a prayer vigil near the street where Terrell was found.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the sheriff’s office at 386-254-1537 or Crime Stoppers at 888-277-8477.
