TAVARES, Fla. – From Jurassic Park to Minecraft, dozens built and decorated more than 20 playhouses at Tavares’ Wooten Park Thursday to be gifted to local children this holiday season.
“There are 64 pieces of wood per house,” said George Graham, a longtime Habitat for Humanity volunteer.
Local businesses, organizations, and volunteers pay an entry fee to Habitat for Humanity of Lake and Sumter County, which covers the cost of building materials for the tiny homes.

They also form design teams to personalize each playhouse.
Danielle Stroud, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Lake and Sumter County, explained, “These teams are competing, but they’re also building for a specific child. The playhouse will be gifted to that child on Saturday. For some, it’s a big Christmas surprise.”
Families selected to receive a playhouse are chosen through local schools and community members in Lake and Sumter Counties.
Graham has spent five years building affordable homes and playhouses with Habitat Lake Sumter . He said the joy of gifting these homes keeps him coming back.
“The kids’ eyes just light up! Some of the sponsors even include presents for the kids. It’s just a wonderful experience,” said Graham.
In addition to spreading holiday cheer, the funds raised will also support Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build more affordable homes for local families.
