‘They stayed right here:’ Brevard Powerball winners live modestly since hitting jackpot, neighbors say

Friday night Mega Million jackpot rivals 2016 Powerball that Dave Kaltschmidt, Maureen Smith won share of

MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. – There are some horror stories how winning the lottery actually turned out to be the worst thing for some people, but not for two people from Brevard County.

Dave Kaltschmidt and Maureen Smith won a share of a record jackpot almost nine years ago, and since then, their neighbors near Melbourne Beach said for the most part, they haven’t really changed.

Ethel Dunbar, 95, also lives in the Sunnyland Beach neighborhood.

“They never flaunted that they were now millionaires and move away,” she said. “No, they stayed right here in Sunnyland Beach area, so it was extra nice to have this sort of fame in the neighborhood, lottery winners.”

Dunbar said if she won a lottery jackpot like Friday night’s Mega Millions, she’d be frugal with her winnings too, but also give some away to cancer research.

“Some day, like polio, it’s gonna be conquered,” she said. “So I think I would give money to cancer if I won the jackpot.”

Kaltschmidt and Smith bought their winning ticket in 2016 at the Publix in Melbourne Beach.

The odds tonight of winning it all Friday night are more than 300 million to 1, but the odds of winning any Mega Millions prize are much better — 24 to 1.
