Man shot by Orlando police officer has died, officials say

Man ID’d as Marvin Martin, 63

ORLANDO, Fla. – A man shot Friday by an Orlando police officer has since died due to “unknown complications,” according to a statement from the police department.

Officers responded around 2:20 p.m. Friday to the 400 block of South John Young Parkway referencing an armed man at the BP gas station near Bus Center Boulevard, according to Orlando police Chief Eric Smith’s remarks later that afternoon.

The man was identified Saturday as Marvin Martin, 63, according to the Orlando Police Department.

Arriving to the scene and locating Martin on the sidewalk outside of the gas station, officers gave him multiple commands to drop a gun that he was allegedly holding, Smith said.

“The suspect refused the commands and was shot by one officer,” Smith said.

Martin was taken to the hospital, where he was in stable condition as of Friday afternoon, according to police.

“With all the calls we received, to be walking around with a gun at a busy intersection — I’m not sure what he was going through. But obviously, he was going through something,” Smith said. “And then not to drop the gun after being given verbal commands? That’s not a good thing.”

Orlando police said that Martin faced charges of resisting without violence, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and unlawful exhibition of a firearm.

According to Smith, that the officer who shot Martin was uninjured in the shooing and had been placed on paid administrative leave.

Smith said that Martin had an extensive criminal history and served 20 years in prison for second-degree murder before being released in 2023.
