Man dies after being shot by Orange County deputies

Shooting happened along Merganser Drive

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A 33-year-old man shot Friday night by Orange County sheriff’s deputies has died, officials announced on Monday.

The man was identified by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as Antonio Chez Scippio.

Deputies said they received a 911 call from Scippio around 5:15 p.m., who stated that he was going to kill himself before hanging up.

Deputies responded to a home on Merganser Drive, where they were let in by Scippio’s relative, investigators added.

“The man came out of a bedroom and walked toward the deputies with a knife,” the release reads. “The deputies gave several commands to (the) man to drop the knife, as they retreated backwards and out of the house.”

However, Scippio continued to walk toward the deputies with the knife, despite repeatedly being told to drop the weapon, officials said.

As a result, deputies fired their guns and struck Scippio, according to investigators.

Scippio was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. He later died.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting and will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review,” the release continues. “Once that process is completed, OCSO will conduct its own internal investigation.”

Meanwhile, the deputies who fired their weapons were placed on temporary paid administrative leave as the investigation unfolds, as per protocol.
