DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A 20-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a man after breaking into a Daytona Beach apartment unit has been indicted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder.

A grand jury on Thursday charged John Fitzgerald Oliphant III with first-degree felony murder, burglary with a battery, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon for pistol-whipping another man in the home.

Around 4 a.m. on March 4, police responded to reports of a burglary and a person shot on Butler Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found two injured victims, a news release states.

Police say a preliminary investigation revealed that several individuals were inside the residence when a knock was heard at the door. Witnesses then observed two masked men with firearms who forced their way inside, the release states. An altercation ensued, during which one victim was pistol-whipped and another was shot, according to the release. The suspects then fled the scene, police said.

Investigators also determined that the suspects and victims were previously acquainted through drug-related activities.

Daytona Beach police Chief Jakari Young told News 6 the shooting happened at a “problem house” that has been a source of complaints from neighbors.

Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Information on other suspects had not been provided at this time of this report.
