New videos show man with rifle shot, killed by Orlando police

Man ID’d as Nick Raymond Bingham, 62

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Police Department on Thursday released body-worn camera video showing officers fatally shooting a man who was holding an “AR-15-style rifle.”

Officers arrived around 2:42 a.m. March 1 to the 200 block of E. Colonial Drive, showing up to studio workspace apartments — rentable but not intended for living — where a 911 caller had reported someone with a gun was beating on their door, the police department said in a statement.

The new videos includes audio from the 911 call. The caller can be heard telling dispatchers that they knew the person with the gun, whom police identified as Nick Raymond Bingham, 62.

“Is someone coming? Because this guy is just beating on my door,” the caller said. “(...) Yeah I do (know him). His name is Nick, and he’s drunk I’m sure, and I’m afraid to go outside and he has weapons.”

“Do you see a weapon?” the dispatcher asked.

“He’s always got a weapon on him,” the caller replied.

As the officers met with the 911 caller and searched the property, Bingham soon emerged through a doorway with what appeared to be a rifle in hand. Multiple camera views show the officers shooting Bingham, who falls backward and drops what he was holding. Officers then attempt to perform life-saving measures, the video shows.

Bingham was pronounced dead at the hospital, the statement reads, adding he was shot because he had “disobeyed” while officers gave him commands to show his hands at the apartments.

The three officers involved in the shooting were not injured and were placed on paid administrative leave, the police department said.

As with all officer-involved shootings, an independent review conducted by FDLE will be turned over to the State Attorney’s office. Additionally, the Orlando Police Department will conduct its own internal investigation.
