The victim told deputies that he was at a red light and did not immediately notice the light turning green when, according to the release, the driver behind him–later identified as Jesus Perez Jr.–began honking his horn until the driver in front of him began to drive.

Deputies said that Perez Jr. continued to drive aggressively as he tried to get around the victim’s vehicle, but was unable to do so because of traffic.

The man told deputies that he drove into the Publix parking lot to avoid further confrontation with Perez Jr., but the suspect followed him in and blocked his exit by pulling in front of him.

“Perez Jr. then exited his vehicle and approached the victim, who was still sitting in his own vehicle, and began shooting at him. The victim returned fire with his firearm until Perez Jr. fled the area in his vehicle,” the release read in part.

Deputies did not report any injuries in relation to the incident.

According to the release, deputies identified and located Perez Jr. on Monday, where he was arrested with the help of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and taken to the Polk County jail.

Perez Jr. faces charges of attempted murder, shooting into an occupied conveyance and discharge of a firearm in public.
