Police said an undisclosed amount of methadone pills was to be purchased by the victim for $160.
William Scott then forcibly took the money from the victim. Both parties then brandished knives, police said. Scott ran back to his vehicle, put the money in the center console and fled the scene.
The victim followed Scott in his vehicle and called 911. He gave directions until he lost sight of Scott near the intersection of Sanford Avenue and Rose Drive, police said.
A Sanford police officer spotted Scott's vehicle and conducted a felony stop near the intersection of Lake Mary Boulevard and Ronald Reagan Boulevard.
Police said Scott stopped his vehicle, but sped away when the officer got out of his police cruiser. Scott traveled south on State Road 417 at a high rate of speed, police said.
Police did not pursue Scott. He was later found when he crashed the vehicle near the intersection of state roads 417 and 434, police said.
