CAPE CANAVERAL SPACE FORCE STATION, Fla. – The military successfully flight-tested a hypersonic missile from Florida’s Space Coast recently, which paves the way for the U.S. Army and Navy to utilize the long-awaited weapons system, according to a U.S. Department of Defense news release.

A hypersonic missile is one that can travel at least five times the speed of sound (Mach 5). The U.S. has several under development.

This test involved the Common Hypersonic Glide Body, developed by leidos. The Army conducted an end-to-end flight test at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station for the missile. It was the second successful flight test.

The Army says the test was also the first live-fire event for the system that will use the missile, the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon system, developed by Lockheed Martin.

Lockheed also developed the Convention Prompt Strike system, which will utilize the missile on board U.S. Navy ships, thus giving the military land and sea hypersonic capabilities once it is integrated.

Several other countries have hypersonic missiles in development. Russia has reportedly used hypersonic weapons in its war with Ukraine.
